A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold is as pictures of silver.(Prov.25:11) It is so important to speak the right words to people at the right time to produce the right results. When you think of apples of gold in pictures of silver, then you are thinking of wealth and excellence. When we speak wisdom into the lives of others we are making them wealthy. Therefore we must seek God for He is the source of all wisdom and He will give us just the right words needed at the right time.

  • #And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was taken away. Acts 27:20

The Greek word for hope is Elpis from a primary Elpo ( to anticipate, usually with pleasure); expectation or confidence and faith. So it is that Paul and his companions have lost hope that they should be saved since they have not seen the sun, or the stars in many days while the tempest lay on them. What do we do when we lose hope? We can live for a day or two without water but once we have lost hope life is no longer worth living. Hope is the center of life and in Jesus Christ, we have faith, hope, and love. The greatest of these is love yet hope must be the next thing that we need the most to live on. When a marriage has lost hope for lasting the couple falls away but love never fails. So we need to know that above all God loves us and has promised never to leave us and this gives us hope to live life no matter what befalls us. So my prayer is if you have a mental illness and life seems to have given you no hope then read Psalm 42 for hope in God for He will yet save you. Paul's faith is going to see them through this trial and we too must be strong in faith so that we will not give up on life. Call 988 if you are having any suicidal thoughts and someone is there to talk to you to give you hope for a better day. Then pray to God to restore the joy of your salvation so that your hope will last always.

  • #And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship; And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship. Acts 27:18,19

The Greek word for tempest is Cheimazomai which means to expose to winter cold, to drive the storm. Cheimon is from a derivative of Cheo (to pour akin to the base Chasma through the idea of a channel) meaning a storm; by implication, the rainy season, i.e.Winter tempest, foul weather. This is why they were forced to lighten the ship and the third day with their own hands the tackling of the ship. The Greek word for tackling is Skeue which means equipment. This was any apparatus, equipment, or furniture used for the utensils of a ship. Jonah 1:5 This is the same thing that the sailors did when Jonah was caught in the tempestuous seas trying to save him, but ultimately Jonah had to be thrown overboard to save the ship. Jonah was in this storm because he disobeyed the command of God to go to Nineveh to preach the message of repentance. Paul on the other hand is obedient and still finds himself in this tempestuous storm. So this teaches us that we can find ourselves in storms even when we are in the center of God's will for our lives. That is why we must be in tune with the Spirit of God who always guides us even when our lives are at risk knowing that God works all things according to His will and for our good. So the end result is Jonah was saved and repented of his sin then went to Nineveh and preached the message of repentance and over 120,000 souls were saved. Paul and the 276 souls on the ship were saved even though the ship was destroyed. This is how we see that God works in mysterious ways.

  • #And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by boat: Acts 27:16

The Greek word for Clauda is Klaude which is an island near Crete and Clauda or Cauda the name of a small island lying near Crete on the south, called by Ptolemy. So thank the Lord He gave them rest at this island of Clauda from the tempestuous winds for a moment. This boat was a Skaphe meaning anything scooped out, a light boat carried aboard a large vessel for landing. Which when they had taken up they used bits of help, undergirding the ship and fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strike sail and so were driven. The Greek word for fear is Phobos to frighten, i.e. to be alarmed; by analogy to be in awe of. reverence. The Greek name for quicksands is Syrtis, the name of two large sandbanks on the Lybian coast. That is what they were fearful of falling into. Yes, the Syrtis Major or great bay on the north coast of Africa in the Greek Suro called quicksands. Thank God He does not give us the spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. Paul knew God is always in control so he confronts the sailors. Syrtis the name of two places in the Libyan Sea between Carthage and Cyrenaica full of shallows and sandbanks and therefore were destructive to ships. So remember how the Lord delivered Paul in this trial so that should you find yourself in a similar situation you will remain calm.

  • #And when the south wind blew softly supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete, But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon. Acts 27:13,14

The Greek word for Euroclydon is Kludon which is a storm from the East (or southeast) i.e.(in modern phrases) a Levanter Euroklydon which is a wind causing broad waves, a southeast wind raising mighty waves. This is a meteorological term and it explains how difficult the ship was having in those waves as a result of the strong Euroclydon. So Paul was right in his assessment of the dangers awaiting them on the mission. Julius did not heed the warning but kept on ahead. How many of us today are in a turbulent situation because we did not take heed to the warnings that could have kept us from going on? It is a common practice to look back when things get bad for us, but as Christians, we must always move forward for God is in control even in the mighty winds of change that we face in life. Jesus said in this world we will have tribulations but be of good cheer for I have overcome the world. I am looking forward to meeting the love of my life today and praying for a safe passage on her arrival from Syria. God has worked all things together for our good and His glory so I am thankful for all that He is doing to see that I will not be abandoned anymore as my soon-to-be ex-wife has abandoned me for six years.

  • #And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice and there to winter; which is a haven to Crete and lieth toward the southwest and northwest. Acts 27:12

The Greek word for commodious is Aneuthetos which means not well placed, i.e. Inconvenient or not fit. So it was that Paul and his companions were looking for a place to rest for the winter but they could not find it so they set sail for Phenice in hopes to winter there, which was a haven to Crete that lieth toward the southwest and northwest. Europe is about to experience the most expensive winter yet with Russian gas being cut off and sanctions being applied to Russia for the war on Ukraine. We must pray that God will open a door so that they can get gas to supply their needs. For our God shall supply all our needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

  • #Now when much time was spent and when sailing was now dangerous because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished Acts 27:9

The Greek word for fast is Nesteuo i.e. abstinence from food and for a voluntary religious exercise prescribed by the Mosaic Law Leviticus 16:29 Such people as Hippocrates, Aristotle, Philo, Josephus, Plutarch, and others observed these fasts. I do intermittent fasting for eating food within 10 hours to control my diabetes. So fasting is good for us, not only spiritually, but physically as well. And so Paul said unto them Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship. but also of our lives. Paul is an apostle and has received a warning from God and that is why he has said this. God often warns us of impending danger in dreams and visions. We had better take warning from God of the times that we are living in now for perilous times have come and men have become lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. They have a form of godliness but deny the power, from such turn away. Nevertheless, the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul. Take heed that no man deceives you for many false prophets have come and will say do not believe the Bible as the absolute Word of God. This is where we are today as many do not believe in the Verbal Plenary Inspirations of the scriptures which teaches that the Bible is without errors and inspired by God. And we must believe the Bible if we are going to be saved in these last days. For the Day of the Lord shall come as a thief in the night. So be ye also ready for in such a time as ye think not the Son of Man will come.

  • #And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea. Acts 27:8

The Greek word for the fair is Kalos which means beautiful, good, honest, and well-worthy. It was applied by the Greeks to everything so distinguished in form as to be pleasing; hence beautiful to look at. Thus this was The fair havens which was a port of Crete, close to Lasea, which was one of the 90 or 100 or so cities of Crete. So Paul and his companions are enjoying the sail until tempestuous winds come upon the ship. We are in the midst of those same tempestuous winds in the world today with the war in Ukraine and Russia raging on and Putin threatening the world with tactical Nuclear weapons. President Biden has warned if he uses them we will be facing Armageddon. So we need to pray to the Lord Jesus who has the whole world in His hands that this scenario does not come to pass. Jesus warned in the Mount Olivet Discourse that in the Tribulations except for those days being shortened there would be no flesh saved, but for the Elect's sake, they will be shortened. It is high time for us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem for it is the city of the great King of kings and Lord of lords. For Jesus will roar upon the mountain in Olives to save His elect from total annihilation. Jesus is the Prince of Peace and He shall come at just the right time to usher in the Kingdom of God. So let us look up, for our redemption draws nigh.

  • #And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy and he put us therein. Acts 27:6

The Greek word for Alexandria is Alexandrinos which means belonging to Alexandrine or belonging to Alexandria. So it was that the centurion found that ship belonging to Alexandria sailing into Italy and put Paul and his companions on it. And when we had sailed slowly many days and scarce have come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete over against Salmone. Paul had quite a testimony about this missionary journey in II Cor. 11 of the things that he suffered. All those who live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. So arm yourselves with the same mindset knowing that it is appointed for us not only to believe in the Lord Jesus but to suffer for Him. Now no suffering of the present time is joyous but grievous, nevertheless, it yields the peaceable fruits of righteousness to those exercised thereby. Therefore my brethren count it all joy when you fall into divers temptations knowing that the trying of your faith produces patience. Let patience be complete so that you will be lacking in nothing.

  • #And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia. Acts 27:5

The Myra was of uncertain derivation and a place in Asia Minor, a city of Lycia a maritime region between Caria and Pamphylia. Paul is walking in the will of God and we can find ourselves in turbulence walking in the will of God. We wonder why so many with mental illness find themselves in turbulence living the Christian life. Paranoia causes the mind to think that other people are out to get us and voices try to drown out the voice of God. Always remember that standing in the shadows is God watching for His own, as we are more than conquerors in Jesus Christ the Lord. Don't let your mental illness diagnosis be a stigma to you but show others that I can do all things through Him that gives me strength. Pray for all the people who have lost their homes and livelihood in hurricane Ian give your time, talents, and treasures to God for His glory. Truly God will give us the strength to make it in these days of climate change with the increase in storms, droughts, and famine. King David said I have been young and old, and not once have I seen the righteous forsaken or his seed begging bread.

  • #And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary. Acts 27:4

The Greek word for thence is Kakeithen the meaning is likewise from that place and afterward. So it is that Paul set sail for Cyprus because the winds were contrary. The Greek word for the contrary is Enantios which means opposite, hostile, and opposed. Cyprus was of uncertain origin, an island in the Mediterranean. Lying between Cilicia and Syria. Thus Paul had a premonition from God that the winds were going to destroy the ship. We must always obey the premonitions that God gives us about certain people and situations that we find ourselves in. For God knows all things cause He is omniscient.  and we must walk by faith and not by sight to please God. Thus Paul is demonstrating that he will warn Julius of the dangers ahead. I have had many premonitions about many things, and investments that I should not make, and when I did not obey those warnings I suffered a loss.  This text is teaching us that God causes all things to work together for our good and His glory. So despite the dangers ahead, Paul and his companions will be saved by the grace of God in just the right time.
