A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold is as pictures of silver.(Prov.25:11) It is so important to speak the right words to people at the right time to produce the right results. When you think of apples of gold in pictures of silver, then you are thinking of wealth and excellence. When we speak wisdom into the lives of others we are making them wealthy. Therefore we must seek God for He is the source of all wisdom and He will give us just the right words needed at the right time.

  • #Paul and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. I Thessalonians 1:1

The Greek word for Thessalonians is Thessalonikeus which is a Thessalonican, i.e. Inhabitant of Thessalonice from Thessalos (a Thessalian) and nike; Thessalonice, a place in Asia Minor a city of Macedonia. Thessalonica (now Saloniki), a celebrated and populous city, situated on the Thermaic Gulf, the capital of the second division of Macedonia and the residence of a Roman governor and quaestor. It was anciently called Therme, but rebuilt by Cassander, the son of Antipater, and called by its new name in honor of his wife Thessalonica, the sister of Alexander the Great. Here, Paul, the apostle founded a Christian Church. So now Paul is with Silvanus, and Timotheus his sons in the ministry strengthening the Church in Thessalonica which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: He says, Grace which in the Greek is Charis which means kindness to be unto you and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ which shows the Heavenly Father that we all have and our Elder brother the Lord Jesus Christ who has purchased us with His Blood. We will hear these terms a lot in this book and peace is a by-product of the filling of the Holy Spirit thus the blessed Trinity is at work.

  • #Preaching the Kingdom of God and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him. Acts 28:31

The Greek word for forbidding is Akolytos which means without hindrance from a compound and a derivative of Koluo; in an unhindered manner, i.e. Freely no man forbidding him. This shows us what a powerful move of the Holy Spirit was upon the people as Paul preached the Kingdom of God and those things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ. Throughout this book of Acts, Paul and Peter preached the Kingdom of God and the power of the Holy Spirit and had much opposition but now no man is forbidding Paul as he preaches as we come to the end of the Book. Koluo the Greek word Kolyo which means to hinder is from the base of Kolazo; to estop, i.e. Prevent. So nothing can prevent the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ from being preached and the Kingdom of God from being advanced. My prayer for all of you as we prepare to celebrate the national day of Thanksgiving is that you have been blessed as we have studied this line by line and precept upon the precept of the book of Acts. Now I shall go to the book of I Thessalonians.

  • #And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house and received all that came in unto him, Acts 28:30

The Greek word for hired house is Misthoma meaning rent or a rented house. This is from the Greek word Misthoo to let out for wages, i.e. (middle voice) to hire. We get the Greek word Misthos which means a reward apparently a primary word for pay for services (literally or figuratively) good or bad. Compensation used of the fruit naturally results from toils and divine recompense endeavors. So Paul was a tent maker by trade, so we can deduce that he used his skills as a tentmaker and preaching to receive wages to pay for the rent house.  Of the rewards which God bestows, or will bestow, upon good deeds and endeavors. To have a reward is used for those for whom a reward is reserved by God, for whom a divine reward awaits. For it is God who gives us the power to earn income and we should use our skills for the glory of God and help others that have a need. For when we stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ we will receive crowns as a reward for preaching the gospel. It is worthy for ministers to be paid for preaching the gospel since they are saving souls. So if we can pay ball players, then we should not complain about paying ministers either. I do not charge for doing this Blog, but it cost me $300 a year to keep this Blog on the web. I trust the Lord to provide for me and know that He provides for all my needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus. So this is what Paul is doing and he received everything that God provided for him.

  • #Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it. Acts 28:28

The Greek word for salvation is Soterios which means saving and is Neuter of the same as Soteria which means defender. He who embodies this salvation, or through whom God is about to achieve it: of the Messiah. Luke 2:30 and the plural occurs in the same sense in Xenophon, Polybius, Diodorus, Plutarch, Lucian, and Herodian. So we see the Jews as a whole rejected this salvation so Paul was sent to the Gentiles, who would believe it. And when he had said these words, the Jews departed and had great reasoning among themselves. Thank God that the unbelief of the Jews led to the salvation of the Gentiles. We are as the wild Olive shoot that is engrafted into the Vine. If therefore the unbelief of the Jews brings salvation to the Gentiles, what more shall their belief bring? Yes, all of Israel will be saved in the Latter Days when they shall say blessed is He who comes in the name of Hossana.

  • #And when they agreed not among themselves,  they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, Acts 28:25

The Greek word for Holy Ghost is Pneuma which means wind; a current air, i.e. Breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively, vital principle, mental disposition, etc., (superhuman ) divine Christ's Spirit. Pneuma is the rational and immortal soul which is mere vitality, even of plants: these terms thus exactly correspond respectively to the Hebrew Nephesh, life, mind, soul. Thus Paul poured out his soul to the people and they agreed not among themselves and departed after that Paul had spoken one word the Rhema by implication a matter or topic meaning a word by implication of the matter. So it took the Pneuma of the Holy Ghost to drive the matter home. Saying, Go unto this people and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand and seeing ye shall see and not perceive: For the heart of this people is waxed gross and their ears are dull of hearing and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart, and should be converted and I should heal them. That is why the Lord Jesus always said let him that hath ears hear what the Spirit is saying to him. Thus you must have spiritual ears to understand the Word of God and when you do then you can be healed.

  • #And some believed the things which were spoken and some believed not. Acts 28:24

The Greek word for believed not is Apisteo from Apistos to be unbelieving, i.e. (transitively) disbelieve, or (by implication) disobey or believe not. We get the English word Apostasy from this and as we get closer to the second coming of the Lord this will be more prevalent as Jesus said when the Son of Man comes back, will there be any faith on the earth? We as ministers are not accountable if the people do not believe, but our job is to broadcast the good news as farmers plant seeds. Some will fall on good soil and some on the lousy ground. Jesus told us to go into the highways and byways and compel them to come into the Kingdom. That is what Paul was doing and though some believed and were added to the body of Christ, those who disbelieved will have their names blotted out of the Book of Life.

  • #And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee. Acts 28:21

The Greek word for Judaea is Ioudaios the Judaean land, a region of Palestine. In a narrower sense, the southern part of Palestine lying on this side of the Jordan and the Dead Sea distinguishes it from Samaria, Galilee, Peraea, and Idumaea. So they neither received letters in this region of Judaea warning them of the dangers of Paul, but we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that everywhere it is spoken against. And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him lodging; to whom he expounded and testified of the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

  • #For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain. Acts 28:20

The Greek word for chain is Halysis which is of uncertain derivation; a fetter or manacle, bonds, i.e. not to be loosed, a chain, bond by which the body or any part of it ( the hands, feet) is bound: specifically used of a manacle or handcuff, the chain by which the hands are bound together. This can have a spiritual connotation where someone is bound to a habit or addiction such as alcoholism, pornography, etc. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to be set free from these addictions when we submit to Him. Do not grieve the Holy Spirit whereby we are sealed unto the day of our redemption. Paul is bound by body and not an addiction to the hope of all of Israel for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. For if Christ has not risen from the dead, then is our preaching in vain, and we of all men are most miserable. Nevertheless, Christ is risen from the dead and has become the first fruit of them that believe. This is the blessed hope that every Christian has today and why we can look to the hills from which our hope comes, for our help comes from God who made the heavens and the earth.

  • #But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of. Acts 28:19

The Greek word for appeal is Epikaleo which means to call upon.; to entitle; by implication, to invoke (for aid, worship, testimony, decision, etc) in the aorist passive tense. Hebraistically to call upon Jehovah, i.e. to invoke the Lord Jesus Christ. Thus Paul was constrained to appeal to Caesar since Jesus told us to pay tribute to Caesar and put our trust in God, knowing that God rules in the affairs of men. Paul did this without accusing the nation of Israel of his suffering knowing that Jesus had warned him that he would suffer many things.

  • #Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go because there was no cause of death in me? Acts 28:18

The Greek word for examine is Anakrino which means to scrutinize, i.e. (by implication) investigate, interrogate, ask questions, discern, judge or search. Happy Veterans Day to all veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice. For greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for his friends. The Lord Jesus told us that we are His friends and that is why He died on the cross for our sins so that we could have eternal life. So Paul is held against his will even though he has done nothing worthy of death. So they investigated him for whether he was a true apostle. What an explicit to use on him after all the miracles God had wroth through him by saving them in the shipwreck and the viper attack. So all, of you soldiers out there know that we thank God for your service and for all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
