A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold is as pictures of silver.(Prov.25:11) It is so important to speak the right words to people at the right time to produce the right results. When you think of apples of gold in pictures of silver, then you are thinking of wealth and excellence. When we speak wisdom into the lives of others we are making them wealthy. Therefore we must seek God for He is the source of all wisdom and He will give us just the right words needed at the right time.

  • #Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry? Jonah 4:4

The Hebrew word for Doest thou well is Yatab which means to be good or pleasing. A primitive root (causative) to make well, literally or figuratively. I Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, look not on his countenance, or on the height of his statue; because I have refused him: for the LORD does not see as man seeth; for the man looked on the outward appearance,  but the LORD looked on the heart. This is why Jehovah God knows what is in the heart of Jonah and Jonah cannot justify his anger at the Ninevites and God for not judging them. This is why we must be careful not to try and justify our actions before God. We must accept that God will have mercy on whom He will have mercy because He is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. So let God be true and all men liars.

  • #Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live. Jonah 4:3

The Hebrew word for die is Maveth which means death and ruin Hades. We are wondering why Jonah wants to die because believers in God do not take their lives; so Jonah is asking God to take him to Hades which is the compartment where Old Testament saints went to awaiting paradise. Jesus transferred Hades to paradise when He died on the cross. So for a believer who dies, he is absent from the body and present with the Lord. Some people who are suffering agonizing pain wish to die, so this is not wrong. For the Apostle Paul said to be absent from the body and present with the Lord is far better. Yet our death is an appointed time that only God knows when it will happen. So for Jonah wishing to die because the Ninevites have repented and God repented of bringing judgment upon them is no reason to want to die. So is Jonah having a mental health emergency? That is a possibility and only seeking out help from a healthcare professional can diagnose this. Clinical depression can cause one to want to die. Perhaps this is why Jonah wants to die. If you find yourself wanting to die, then do not hesitate to call 988 and counselors will direct you to the health care that you need.

  • #And he prayed unto the LORD and said,  I pray thee,  O LORD,  was not this my saying when I was yet in my country?  Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness and repented the of the evil. Jonah 4:2

The Hebrew word for kindness is Checed meaning goodness and beauty. I Samuel 20:14 And thou shalt not only while yet I live to show me the kindness of the LORD, that I die not. What kindness. Jehovah God shows us by allowing us to live and not die. Should not Jonah be considereth of these Ninevites who have repented?  As David said surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. This same God who is merciful to usward is also merciful to others. Jonah is learning how he must reciprocate that same mercy to the Ninevites. The question is did Jonah truly learn this lesson?  We too must be kind and tender-hearted forgiving others just as Christ has forgiven us.

  • #But it displeased Jonah exceedingly and he was very angry. Jonah 4:1

May is Mental Healthcare awareness month and Jonah is having a mental psychosis. The Hebrew word for angry is Charah which means to burn with or be kindled with jealousy. This response to the repentance of the Ninevites should have caused a feeling of joy but instead, Jonah is geeked with rage. Psychologists would call this a chemical imbalance in the brain. How could a man of God not respond well since God has spared the Ninevites from annihilation? Clearly, Jonah needs to sit down on the couch and let it all out so that the psychologist can diagnose him properly. It surprises me how many people will not seek psychological help when needed but will wait until they have a mental breakdown. Call 988 if you are feeling suicidal before it is too late. We will see that Jonah is so angry that he wishes he could die. God is going to demonstrate his love to Jonah to teach him why the Ninevites deserved to be spared too from judgment.

  • #And God saw their works,  that they turned from their evil way and God repented of the evil, that He had said that He would do unto them and He did it not. Jonah 3:10

Happy Mother's Day! I praise God my mother is in heaven rejoicing in the Lord with my father. Praise God they taught us to repent of our evil ways as children, just as these Ninevites had done. Amos 7:3. The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, So the LORD imputes rightousness It is paradoxical that God repented, but the key is the Ninevites repented so God forgave them and did not bring judgment as He warned through Jonah. Proverbs 20:28. Mercy and truth preserve the king and his throne is upholden by mercy. Romans 11:31. Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. Just as through the unbelief of the Jews the Gentiles have obtained mercy. This is how God imputed righteousness to the Gentiles that believe and turn to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • #Who can tell if God will turn and repent and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? Jonah 3:9

The Hebrew word for repent is Nacham which means to be sorry to avenge. Genesis 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man and beast and creeping things and the fowls of the air; for it repented me that I have made them. This is the first time God used the word repent but because of Noah God saved mankind from destruction. Now because the Ninevites have repented of their wicked ways, God will repent and save them from destruction too.

  • #But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way and from the violence that is in their hands. Jonah 3:8

The Hebrew word for violence is Chamas which means cruelty and oppression. Genesis 6:11 The earth also was corrupt before God and the earth was filled with violence. This is how the Ninevites were and why God was about to destroy them as he did the antediluvian generation, and we see the great Love and mercy of God for sending Jonah to preach this message of judgment. Jesus said that just before his second coming the earth will be as it was in the days of Noah. Thank God that these Ninevites repented from man to beast covered in sackcloth and crying mightily to God. Let us pray for America to turn from this gun violence and cry to the Lord for mercy to be saved from the judgment to come just like the Ninevites did. Jesus is the ark of safety and we can find mercy and forgiveness through his shed blood on the cross. Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

  • #And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water; Jonah 3:7

    1. The Hebrew word for the decree is Taam which stands for a mandate; i.e. judgment. Psalm 119:66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge; for I have believed thy commandments. The king of Nineveh and his nobles believed the word of the Lord and pronounced sentences on man, beast herd, and flock not to taste anything or drink water in order to comply with the commandments. We too must learn this lesson as a nation and turn from our wicked ways to please the Lord and keep his commandments. 2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven and forgive their sin and will heal their land.
  • #For word came unto the king of Nineveh and he arose from his throne and he laid his robe from him and covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. Jonah 3:6

The Hebrew word for sackcloth is Shaqaq; i.e.Coarse loose cloth or sacking (used in mourning and for bagging) This shows the humility of the king and his repentance. God is pleased with the remorsefulness and is going to forgive their sins. 2 Cor. 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of but the sorrow of the world worketh death. O that America would repent and return to the God of our fathers then families can be restored and God will heal our land. Matt. 3:8 Bring forth, therefore, fruits meet for repentance: Hebrews 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: This is what the Ninevites have done at the preaching of Jonah and now the Lord who is preaching to us is calling for us to do the same.

  • #So the people of Nineveh believed God and proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. Jonah 3:5

The Hebrew word for fast is Tsom. I do intermittent fasting to control my diabetes and weight. Fasting is a sign of penitence and God is pleased when we fast. Hebrews 11:6 He that comes to God must believe that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him, for without faith it is impossible to please God. So the people believed God and their faith was counted to them as righteousness.
